Look at different stores where you can rent a carpet cleaner. Home improvement stores and grocery stores will usually have them. You can even buy one if you plan on cleaning your carpets often.
Buy a recommended carpet cleaning soap for the cleaning machine. Ask the person renting you the machine if you are unsure of what to get.
Before you start cleaning your carpets, make sure to vacuum well. You need to get as much dirt up from the carpet as possible.
If you have any really bad stains, spray on some spot cleaner 10-15 minutes before you begin cleaning the carpet.
Follow the directions on the machines use. Make sure to add the proper amount of soap and water to the reservoir. Too much soap with makes suds on your carpet and make it much harder to clean up.
Start in a small out of the way area and make sure that the soap does not discolor your carpet.
Clean one room at a time slowly and thoroughly.
