How to Find Legit Work from Home Jobs Without Falling Victim to a Scam

Author: dohow 18-05-2011, 19:24 Job Search & Employment » Find a Specific Job
As the economy shifts to adjust to the economic changes brought on by recession and depression, more people find themselves jobless and seeking to work at home and make enough money to live on by way of self-employment or hired work-from-home opportunities. While there are plenty of legitimate work from home jobs, there are also plenty of scams. Learn how to find the legit sources of telecommuting jobs and home-based jobs so you can join the growing numbers of people earning a living out of the home.

Instructions

  • Avoid work-at-home employment opportunities that don't seem to be work. Online ads promising you can "Make $10,000 a month stuffing envelopes" are obviously, well, a scam. But something along the lines of "Earn Money By Doing What You Love" may be legit. The key here is WORK--working at home isn't easy--it's still work. Don't be swayed by promises you can earn money while working from home for nothing.
  • Choose professions that are computer- or Internet-based--anything from data entry to programming to graphic arts to Web content writing or technical writing. These are more likely to offer legit telecommuting opportunities.
  • Look for contract-based work from home if you have skills in clerical, administrative, technology, writing or marketing work. Sites such as oDesk, eLance, Guru, and RentACoder (see Resources for links) are used on a contract basis by employers and individuals looking for workers for specific projects. In these job boards, you bid or apply for specific work projects. Generally, you'll work for less at first, but as you build a reputation, you'll be able to earn significant amounts working from home.
  • Seek out government jobs that offer alternative scheduling and work at home or telecommuting opportunities, such as those offered by the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation.
  • Become an entrepreneur. Work for yourself. Start a business part-time, either producing a product, providing a service or doing online marketing, and operate it ideally online, to take advantage of where the new opportunity is. It will be slow-going at first, but there is much work-from-home opportunity to be had for creative and hard-working individuals. Don't be lured by scam artists to invest lots of money in starting your own business--in most cases, the costs should be low.
  • Tips & Warnings

    • It's sometimes hard to figure out whether some work-from-home jobs are truly legit or a scam. If the work sounds too easy, it may be too good to be true...or it may be a new opportunity. That's because online commerce is in a growth spurt as traditional commerce is experiencing a recession. New Internet business models are popping up every day...some legitimate, some fraudulent or misleading. Research all employment opportunities in online forums and use your good judgement.
