California Tow Truck Driver Requirements

If you ever had to have you car towed, you know what a headache it can be. Not only are you worried about what went wrong with your car, but you are also worried about the safety of the car while it is being towed. To ensure that tow truck drivers are qualified, the state of California has regulations in place for tow truck drivers

Certification

According to California statutes, all tow truck drivers must be certified. This means they must have background checks and drug tests and take a driving test. If the driver has lived in California fewer than 7 years, fingerprinting is mandatory. After meeting all the criteria, an endorsement is placed on the driver's license.

Commercial Driver's License

Any person who drives a tow truck capable of towing more than 10,001 pounds must have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Any person under 18 cannot drive for hire. As part of obtaining a CDL, a complete 10-year history check must be performed, along with a motor vehicle record check for the 10 years preceding the application.

Medical Exam

Prior to driving a tow truck, a medical exam is required. This includes extensive vision testing, and a medical background check for any conditions that prevent the safe operation of a tow truck. Drug testing is also included in this. Most tow truck companies require a medical exam as a condition of employment, even if no CDL is required.
