Sports psychology is used to achieve results by helping to manage a player's emotions and minimizing the psychological effects of poor performance. In college, players are oftentimes faced with injury, subpar performance or overwhelming time constraints. Sports psychology can be applied to ease the players' minds by helping them achieve their goals and feel confident about what they are doing. Additionally, sports psychology can help a college student become more focused on her schoolwork and her team through increased concentration and preparedness.

Instructions

  • Call a player into the coach's office to talk with him after a practice or workout. The goal is to have a one-on-one meeting with the player where you can determine what that player's goals are for the school year, both long and short term. Topics included should be academic goals, personal sports goals and team sports goals. Communicating with a player is often the first step in boosting his confidence because you are showing that you care about him and his future.
  • Help the player relax and set goals by developing a plan. Focus on things such as visualization, concentration, awareness and confidence. The goals that are set for the player should be clear and measurable. In addition, all goals that are set should be attainable in an effort to help the player relax. Setting attainable goals will help to boost the player's psychological confidence.
  • Check to make sure all the goals are easily and immediately measurable for the quickest results. For example, set a goal for a test score in a class that the player is having trouble in or set a goal for the number of mistakes that the player will commit in that day's practice.
  • Implement the plan by writing everything down that occurs in the meeting. Having the goals in writing will allow the player to visualize herself achieving them because they will not be easily forgotten.
  • Meet with the player after practice at least twice weekly to discuss the goals that were set from the last meeting and to set some new goals for the future. Over time, as the player's confidence grows, make the goals a little more difficult to achieve, always remembering to follow through on the player's progress.
  • Tips & Warnings

    • Getting in a routine with school and practice will often help a student athlete settle in and gain confidence.

    • Handle each player differently as some players are more fragile than others.
