How to Plant Garlic on the West Coast
Garlic (Allium sativum) is a common cooking herb used to flavor many dishes. Garlic plants grow in a similar way to onions. On the West Coast, garlic is grown mainly in home gardens. Garlic is a compound bulb that is made up of sections or cloves. The narrow, flat leaves reach 12 inches tall. The bulb, leaves and flower stalks are edible. Garlic plants are propagated by planting bulb divisions, not by seeds. Planting garlic on the West coast allows the plants to grow without harsh extreme temperature exposure found elsewhere.
